Orange County Coastkeeper is looking for kelp restoration volunteers to help with our on-going Giant Kelp Restoration Project. For the last 2 years we have been training middle school and high school students how to grow kelp in their classrooms and training Dive volunteers how to plant it and monitor it. We have restored nearly 1/2 acre in Crystal Cove State Park with the help of more than 1500 students and 130 volunteer divers.
We dive 2-3 days per week (weekdays) from our boat which leaves out of Newport Harbor. Volunteers must have at least rescue certification and have 30 hours of cold water diving. Divers must also get an AAUS (American Association of Underwater Scientists) approved physical or already be an AAUS diver in good standing.
