a sausage (at least the ones I have) would be difficult to deploy underwater. shooting a lift bag is relativly easy once the skill has been practiced (which is a must). some tech divers use a red lift bag to indicate a distress situation, but I suspect most people would not know that. orange is the most visable color, and a small bag 25-50 lbs, is more than adaquate for this use.
