A fact not known by many is that a small percentage of abalone create pearls, usually of irregular shape. They are usually found in the gut of the abalone, and are found by feeling for hard lumps in the gut while cleaning it. Most are tiny, but this Guinness World Record Abalone Pearl, which was found in 1990, is enormous. Although all of the ones I have were gathered many years ago from greens I assume this one came from a red.
