Never been on this boat, but I have friends who love diving the Sundiver and think the world of the Captain. Unfortunately, under Maritime law, the Captain is responsible for his passengers safety (period). Captains should demand that their DM's tick off divers and returning divers, on all dives and especially when moving the boat. If a DM doesn't follow the Captain's orders, then the Captain should dismiss the DM on the spot and return to port if that is the only DM (period).

The DiveMaster was negligent in checking his divers - especially given that this is an open water dive. I'd recommend he find another course of work, as this action was inexcusable and he is damn lucky the diver didn't die. I am certain he is heartsick about this incident, but safety comes first. I would never dive on a boat with this DM.
