One other important factor...most skippers would meet with the d.m. before leaving the harbor and get a report of the divers on board, their experience etc., and never pull the hook until he was assured by me that all divers were back on board.
The first boat to violate these practices (a certain vessel out of Ventura) was my last as a dm.
