I have been curious about this topic also. I think all new divers should log all dives. I personally log all ocean dives and what I consider serious freshwater dives. Which are high altitude dives or dives 25 ft. or more. I don't log all my river dives (25 ft. or less) and my dives in shallow pools and lakes.

Over the last 30 something years. I have lost about 5 or 6 log books. I use to move a lot and my first wife liked to toss them in the trash. The main reason I keep a log of more serious dives. In case I ever feel ill after a dive. There is a record of what I did. So far that has never happened. I am a very conservative diver, unlike my politics. Remember Murphy's Law.
