Westlake Village diver pulled from ocean, dies
Rescue crews were unable to revive a diver Tuesday who was found unconscious near Santa Cruz Island, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
Joseph Longo, 42, of Westlake Village died after he was found at Painted Cave near Santa Cruz Island, said officials from the Ventura County Medical Examiners-Coroners Office.
The Coast Guard Station Channel Islands Harbor received a call from a commercial diving vessel out of Santa Barbara about the diver at 9:20 a.m., officials said. Crew members on the vessel had rescued the diver and were attempting to administer CPR.
A 47-foot rescue boat and a 25-foot rescue boat with a Ventura County Fire Department EMT crew were sent to help, officials said. The diver was transferred to the larger boat, where medical personnel were unable to revive him.
Officials said the diver was a passenger of the diving vessel. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
