I would find a San Diego boat that is going to San Clemente Island. San Clemente Is. is a wonderful place to dive in August, great vis, warm water, big fish. It is my favorite Island.
You could also drive up to Long Beach and take a boat to San Clemente or Santa Barbara Island. I would avoid Catalina in the Summer, the hoards of crazy boaters make it a zoo, and in my opinion unsafe to dive from June through September.
