I think if I saw them I would know. We used to always see the pilot whales in the chanel on the way to Santa Cruz island.
What I was told was unusual was seeing them in the surf at Zuma Beach. I saw two with a grey whale, basically in the surf, near the south end of Zuma. Ken Norris was an instructor of mine at UCSC who told me that though the greys come in shallow, it was very unusual to see pilot whales that shallow. I guess maybe he knew what he was talking about.
Enjoy the diving, seahunt
