There is a rocks, rips, and reefs course at Crystal Cove (Reef Point) on October 9 (Orange County). Don't know if you're familiar with this great beach diving program, but its perfect for the diver who is new to beach diving. Each site has its unique entry and exit characteristics and the 3R's prepares you at a VERY reasonable cost ($5 donation; usually includes a bbq lunch!) - this is for 3 plus hours of training!

You're on your own for a dive, though there is usually someone you may meet to buddy up with after the morning lesson. Even if you're not up for a dive after the fairly intense practice, you can return to the site better prepared for your next dive.
