Catalina is a nice place to dive but I am not sure it is the right place to start learning. What city do you live in? I am sure there is a reputeable shop close by that someone will know of.
The first thing I did when I wanted to start diving was go talk to the people at the shops that were somewhat near my house. I finally picked a shop after finding one where I felt the owners where helpful and knowledgeable and not just trying to get my wallet out of my pocket.
