I agree with Dave D, that Catalina is probably not your first choice for learning SCUBA. Why, well for starter there is the added cost of getting there if you don't live on the island.
Take SCUBA instruction from some place you can get to easily and take your time taking the lessons. You don't want it to be a two day thing. You want to be able to read the material, and do your pool sessions. Most dive shops around SoCAl will have you do some beach dives and a couple of boat dives, so you may end up diving in Catalina for the boat dives.
