it depends.
When there are two or more divemasters it is easy to keep trak of the times.
When I work alone I only try to keep track of who gets off and rturns, and then once I think all have returned I do a roll call in which I must personally see everyone onboard. If I know everyone and the group is small enough I just walk around and persoally see everyone on the roster is there. For larger groups I do a formal roll call, but I make sure I personally see (not just hear) everyone.
When divers are in the water I beleive it is more important for me to watch conditions and see if anyone needs help than pay attention to times on the board.
