You might encounter some Marlins or Sail fish in So Cal, but it is a factor of the water temperature. San Diego can be a critical cutoff. In El Nino years anything can show up anywhere. Swordfish used to be common.
Tuna are common to much of CA, especially seasonally. Yellow tail, barracuda and dorodo are common and popular open water fish. Divers see Black Sea bass up to 600 pounds.
