The white deposits all around the vents are due to a special bacteria that uses the hydrogen sulfide coming from the vents as their energy source.

There really are a lot of small fish at Whites Point - the visibility was just too low to see them. On a rare day when Whites Point does have good visibility, it is an amazingly beautiful place to dive. There are schools of fish, bat rays, all kinds of things. I dove there regularly for two years before I ever saw what Whites Point really looks like.
