Vladivostok, Russia - A shark on Friday attacked a diver near Russia's Pacific Kuril islands, biting deep into his leg and releasing him only after he managed to entangle the creature in his fishing net, hospital officials said.

Vladimir Skutelnik, who was fishing for deep-water seafood off the Kunashir island's coast, was rushed to a local hospital with severe wounds and decompression sickness.

It remained unclear as to what shark attacked Skutelnik, with the victim claiming his assailant was a great white shark, rarely seen in the north Pacific. Experts suggested that it was either a blue or a salmon shark, which frequent these waters.
