It probably has something to do with:
Some people like rebreathers, some people don't
Some people hunt, some people do photography
Some people like technical diving, some people like recreational diving.
Everyone has their own thing that they get out of diving. Part of it is finding your own niche that you like and are comfortable with and allowing for others to have different preferences. I doubt that it is any more complex than that.
