The stores usually require a "drysuit card" or taking their class, which then gives you a card, before they will rent you a drysuit.

The class is usually in a pool, although sometimes also includes an ocean dive as well.

Of all the "specialites" the drysuit class is the most useful for cold water diving, IMO.

If someone lives north of ... say ... San Simeon, then buying your own drysuit is practically a must, for central and north coast scuba (and Tahoe). The class is usually free, when you buy a suit at a store.

If the store doesnt give you a free class, buy your suit somewhere else where they do.
