Questions: Will a 5mm suit be adequate for early Sept.?
For one dive, but not multiple dives. A 7mm with hooded vest is your best choice. However the water is usulally at it's warmest in late September.

Can you recommend a dive company? and why them?
I would reccomend taking a dive trip on one of the dive boats out of Long Beach or San Pedro. Ocean Safari, Reef Seekers, or Sea d Sea would all be good choices for dive companies that charter the local boats. These dive companines can set you up with any rental gear you might need. Ocean Safari even carries all your gear for you. If you have all your own gear just book a trip on a boat such as the Great Escape. He has a few tanks and weights available and will will make sure you have what you need if you prearrange it.

If you had to choose 2 dive locations on the island, what would you recommend to us?
Depends on Conditions.
