I mounted a Dive Alert on my newly certified fiancee's LP inflator hose together with a flashlight of her own, and I stuffed a safety sausage into one of her B/C pockets as well. I have the same items with me, plus a signalling mirror from my tech gear (was for the bubble check). We are ready for southern California boat diving! And Florida. And Mexico. And Hawaii.
As Max implied, it helps your odds to take responsibility for yourself, as a diver.
I am not comfortable with the idea of flares, but that would truly be the next level. :-)
