Forget any negative reviews you might have read about this very low budget independent movie in current release. Bottom line: considering its shoestring budget, it's very, VERY good! I've dove those waters and with those half day charter venues many times and the movie depicts them in authentic detail, with only very minor exceptions. If you think JAWS caused a dent in the scuba industry, wait'll the ripples spread from OPEN WATER. Our industry is about to take a serious economic hit, especially in the warm water venues.
As to the picture's controversial ending, it's right on. Given the story line, a "happy" ending would have been a serious cheat.
