Coral (?) in Crescent Bay, Laguna. Also ? about Shaw's Cove.

I went for my first time to Crescent Bay in Laguna Beach on Saturday. Beautiful day with great viz - tons of garibaldi, sardines (?), two bat rays, an octopus and a bunch of other litte fishies.

I had a question - I noticed something on the reefs that looked like brain coral. Is it brain coral? I have no idea what kind of coral is in this area and was wondering if anyone was familiar with this spot. To be more exact, I swam out toward the second reef (that sticks out, not Deadman's and not Seal Rock.) Next time I'll get pictures!

Thanks! And also, I have a friend who doesn't dive, but wants to snorkel. I will take her to Crescent Bay, but was wondering if Shaw's Cove is better for snorkeling? I know it all depends on tides, weather, etc...but historically, is one better than the other?
