I've been roundly criticized for my positive review of this very low budget film; criticism that we shouldn't encourage anyone to see a film that will potentially have an economically adverse effect on diving, especially on warm water venues. I agree. Also, there are a couple of holes in the flick's doughnut. The location is established with a shot of Buck Island, St. John, Virgin Islands; a very mountainous island. Whether there or off ANY Caribbean or Bahama island, recreational diving venues do NOT put divers in the water out of sight of land. Also, the picture should not be promoted as "Based on a true event". The true event, in Australia, has absolutely no relationship to the narrative of Open Water. The credit should read, "Inspired by a true event". And, most importantly, the odds of being left behind by a charter dive boat are about on par with being struck by lightening on a sunny day.
Enough awready, okay? Gracias.
