Open water= more money, bigger gun, different point and preferable a wooden gun. You will be taking longer shots at faster fish. A wooden gun is more quiet and won't spook a fish like a metal gun will. I suggest you do some target practice first. There are some serious open water spearfishermen on this board. That know a lot more about it than me. Hopefully that will share their expertise.
Rock fish = smaller gun, rock point, rock fish are easier to shoot. Many are also territorial and if spooked will return to their favorite place.
I personally use a JBL sawed off magnum. A mid-sized spear gun (metal version) with a rock point. I may get a JBL Magnum wooden version one of these days. The better and really nice spearguns can rival a regular hunting rifle on price.
Third, it is obvious, but never shoot a spear gun out of the water. I knew a guy that once did - a non-diver.
