SEA RANCH, Calif. -- A man free-diving for abalone off the coast near Sea Ranch died Sunday when he went too deep, authorities said.
U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Joseph Ford said the man was diving without any breathing apparatus when he dove too far and inhaled a lung full of water.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
