Bonaire crime?

I'm thinking about going to Bonaire next June for some diving. I've poked around on the web and have read reports of rampant thievery. Any and all things are looted from cars and hotel rooms apparently. Even the resort, Captain Don's Habitat, urges its guests to lock belongings up, always, and to leave rental cars unlocked.

Any comments or personal experience?
