I've been there a couple of times and have never had a problem. I have heard the same things about Bonaire. The last time I was there, I went with a couple of friends. We left nothing in the car and always left it unlocked. We stayed cautious and avoided anything we saw that made us uncomfortable.
Bonaire is a great place. Our rental car was an old, beat up, beige van with the floor rusting out. I got to be designated driver because it had a stick shift. It was a lot of fun actually.
