Any tips for a new beach diver?

I'm getting back into SCUBA after a 15-year hiatus. As a kid, I did a lot of diving in FL and a little in Catalina. A friend who has done resort diving only will join me on our first beach dive in San Diego this weekend. We'll take it easy and real cautious-like, but does anyone have any tips/words of wisdom/warnings for the first trek out to the beach?
