If it has been 15 years since you have been diving, I suggest you take the Open Water course again - Before going SCUBA Diving. A lot has changed in the past 15 years, including equipment; not to mention what you have forgotten and what skills you no longer have from lack of use (but probably still think you have).

Your Resort diving buddy should also take the Open Water Class with you. Diving in Southern California, with the 7mm suits, 20+ pounds of weight, and limited visibility is quite challenging compared to 85 degree water, 100+ feet of visibility and 2mm suits with <10 pounds of lead.
