I actually measured the distance once in Laguna when we had great vis. I spooled out until I could still see my buddy at 45 feet. Along rocky shores such as Christmas Tree Cove in Palos Verdes, I've seen close to 60 feet, but that was maybe 2-3 times in the past 15 years. Dale Sheckler once claimed to have well over 100 feet vis at Pt. Fermin, but I think he must have been breathing an exotic gas that day. :-)The best I've seen in Malibu was 40 feet at Leo Carillo.
