The best vis I have ever seen was at Cortes Banks and it was probably 200 feet. Looking at my buddy on the surface from 85 feet it seemed like I could touch him. A bat ray over the reef looked like a bird flying.
I wish I had gotten some pics.
I've seen similar conditions at Malibu once. When the Santana Winds blow, watch the water temperature. If it drops 4 or 5 degrees suddenly figure the wind has blown off the surface water and it has been replaced by a cold upwelling.
It was weird. While swimming along off shore you could look all the way to the sand. Other than that, I doubt I have seen it over 50 feet.
