Yes, adding another connector is another potential failure point. For that matter, both the alternate air inflator and signal device are failure points and are many times more likely to fail than the simple connector (I'm sure some on the other board are foaming at the mouth to jump on this one).

As for the flow rate of the SP connectors, I'm sure that's what SP says, but I suspect it has more to do with locking you into SP brands than diver safety. Scubapro sells this same adaptor and Atomic even advertises it. It's also possible to change out the SP fitting on the Air2 and replace it with a standard fitting--with SP's own parts.
