I've done this with an old Oceanic Prodigy (for another reason - it locks out if you turn it on under 10' - really obnoxious feature for my wife who kept forgetting to turn it on).
To be honest I didn't try it with the Suunto - oh well, guess that's why I use tables for back-up. In any case, I've resolved to never violate it again.
