Back when I certified, they made us work in kelp. We had to pop up through it and open a hole and slip back down without getting hung up. It was GREAT experience and I have cherished it for many years.
Something for next time, the Peace makes some very distinct sounds under water. As you swim to her, you can hear her overhead -- but you have to listen. You cannot tell sound direction underwater, but you can tell the volume. That is how I know when I am under the boat and ready to start coming up.
