SOUTH AFRICA (30 Oct 2004) -- An Australian deep diver found the skeletal remains of another diver who disappeared 10 years ago.

David Shaw was attempting to set a new world record at Boesmansgat sinkhole when he found the skeleton of Deon Dreyer at a depth of 271 meters.

Dreyer disappeared at Boesmansgat during a record attempt in 1995.

Although Shaw had planned to go deeper than 271 meters, he stopped his descent when he found Dreyer's remains.

Shaw's dive, which took nine-and-a-half hours, did better the previous record of 242 meters for a rebreather dive.

Earlier in the week, South African Verna van Schaik set a new world record for women at Boesmansgat with a dive to 221 meters.
