Stick with the white vinegar - 3$ a gallon, no danger, and INCREDIBLY effective.
I found a fishing reel in decent condition in sixty foot of water, with some growth on it. I was told give it a week in white vinegar.
I should have only given it three days....after a week the area of the reel that was above the vinegar in my closed tupperware container 9only subjected to fumes!)had it's chrome plating eaten off.
