The surface temps get to the low 50s in the Winter. The orange Cup coral is the only true coral in California. Hydrocoral is actually a sponge. And yes, there are plenty of shallow water areas along the coast, not just at Catalina. South of the Piedres Blancas lighthouse is a stretch of rocky shoreline that is excellent snorkelling. Monterey, Palos Verdes, Orange County and La Jolla also have great snorkelling sites. Any beach access along the coast with rocks and/or kelp will have shallow water snorkelling available.
