Photoshop elements is specifically made to be bundled with various graphics hardware, such as scanners, graphics tablets, color printers, digital cameras, etc. In many cases you can purchase a scanner bundled with photoshop elements that costs the same as the price of elements itself. In this case it would never pay to just buy Elements as an individual purchase.
From my last two hardware purchases I have a Photoshop Elements 2.0 and Photoshop 5.0 LE. As photoshop user I would recomend the Photoshop 5.0 LE as a better stepping stone to learning Photoshop.
Best part: you may have friends who already own Photoshop and have unused copies of Photoshop LE or Elements laying around that they will never use!
If not and you can get to redondo beach I'd be happy to sell you my unused CDs with serial no#s for half the store price.
