Underwater, swells translate into surge, that is to say lateral water motion -- anywhere from a foot or two to a dozen feet or more. This is not usually dangerous in itself, unless you are diving in very shallow water near rocks. However, some people find the motion disconcerting or nauseating. Also, the surge stirs up bottom sediment, which reduces visibility and generally makes for bad diving.
