Good eye.
In fact, that is exactly what it is. Notice the bricks scattered nearby? Based on current knowledge and consensus, that area is believed to be the the Chinese galley area, and the object, the communal rice pot for the Chinese crew members who were carried aboard the Olympic II (ex- Star of France) as fish cleaners and preparers when she was operated by the Alaska Packers Assoc. as a salmon fisher in the first part of the 20th C.
Though with the implementation of the "Iron Chink" which could mechanically clean and dress salmon 50-70% faster than by hand, the need for Chinese cannery workers began to decline.

Your history lesson for Thursday, December 2, 2004 ;-)

Stay wet (unless you're reading history...)
