I can't speak to the economics of it, I just know that I liked the instructor and I think that I was well trained when I finished. As for the equipment, I certainly went for less expensive gear because I was not sure I would like diving. I got mask and snorkel that I no longer use because I upgraded to a Hydroptix mask. My fins are Scubapro Jet Fins, my booties Excel Titanium and my gloves Tilos titanium, and I still use all of them.
