You failed to mention whether northern or southern California is going to be your vacation destination.
Most people who come to California go to Disneyland in southern California.
In close second place are Marine World in San Diego or else the bay cruises of San Francisco.
So it all depends on what you want to do.
If it were only for scuba diving, and I had to guess what is the most beautiful diving in California, and I wanted to be honest, I would have to say Santa Catalina Island in southern Calif is the most beautiful.
The next question would be when?
Well, the socalif boys and girls can give you a better sense of when the weather is the most predictable and the vis is the most clear.
All in all, you are going to find diving in California a lot like Maine. So bring your drysuit with you.
Right now the waters in northern Calif are 55F and clear. But that is between storms, if and when you can get out there to scuba dive.
