It's not very difficult at all. The book that you're most likely referring to is called the "Oxygen Hackers Companion" and is published by Airspeed Press. It's an excellent reference to own even if you never set up your own mixing station.
Let us know how it works out for you. Building a mixing whip is high on my list of homebrew projects. It keeps getting delayed by my #1 homebrew project of constantly rebuilding the lower unit on my OMC outdrive :-)
