I agree I was treated the same way. I found though that when I was taking pictures I burned air much faster than when just looking. When I took pictures I was usually one who surfaced early. Otherwise about at an hour. Either way was no problem.
A saftey sausage is a good item to have so you are seen on the surface. Also remeber the name of your boat. A few times a different boat showed up and I just told them the name of my boat and they radioed them. This seems to be common practice for all boats in Cozumel.
