Malarone is becomming the drug of choice.
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is second choice.
Larium used to be popular, but is inneffective against certain strains of maleria. In addition, in some individuals it causes side effects that can be mis-diagnosed as DCS sickness. The PNG Diving Association strongly recommends against Larium.
Fansidar is a strong sulfa druh to be taken if you become infected, but is too strong to be taken as a profilaxis.
All of the above are prescription drugs and require a doctors order.

In addition, Dengue fever is becomming more prevelent in the North-Central American area. It is a mosquito transmitted virus that will cause you serious problems for up to a year.
