I agree with Kathryn. What you experienced is
not the norm for most boats... here in the LA area
anyway.

Sounds like you found a lobster hunting trip where
lobster really wasn't the focal point. There are
many boats that do trips like you describe. Moving
around from spot to spot, trying to get to the
best and hottest bug hunting they can find. My
experience is that some boats and captains have
the knack, others only say they do. Independent of
whatever trip your local shop may say, ask other
divers in the area that dive the boat REGULARLY.
The locals are much more tuned in to the local bug
trends. Follow their advice and you can't go wrong
when it comes to boats and captains in general.

Also, keep in mind that anything you read in a
newspaper or magazine about bug diving hot spots
is old news at best. It's like the stock market.
If it made money for someone last week, it's
major profitability factor has already been used
up. You need to be in tune with someone (boat,
Capt, other divers) that were there 'yesterday',
not last week, month or season.
