I entered at the first cove and easily swam to the reef. The dive was okay but being aware of the current, I chose to return early so I could make most of the swim underwater. I didn't make it far enough, though. I surfaced into a strong eastward-flowing surface current and swam for 20 minutes, making very little headway. I had to put into the nearest cove, where I was smashed into the rocks and lost a fin. Once I got out of the water, I assisted several other divers who had similar difficulty swimming against the current. Everyone was exhausted and worried, and I was concerned about the safety of many divers. Pt. Dume is obviously a difficult dive and I'm hesitant to do it. However, I do not know of anyone ever being hurt at that location.
