Newport Beach is sand, sand and more sand. The only diving here is Newport pier. There's a lot to see under the pier and on the pilings, but due to the fishing going on overhead it can be dangerous. Newport Canyon is offshore from the pier, but it's a long swim. Therew is great snorkelling almost anywhere along the California coast, but you won't catch me out there without at least a thick wetsuit. In the Summer, surface temps can reach as high as the low 70s. It is in the low 50s in the Winter.
