Tim, I guess this counts as urban legend, something you hear and never really know the truth of, but I've heard that game wardens traditionally have the broadest search authority of any law enforcement. I think that seeing fishing or hunting gear on a vessel or in a vehicle lets them search it. I would imagine that scuba gear counts as fishing gear, since it is a common method of taking game.

we recently got a pretty thorough search because I spilled coffee on the side of the boat, they thought it was blood. Figures, most mornings that's all taht's in my bloodstream.
