One thing to remember is that the hoses have (at
least) three layers: An inner layer that keeps the
gas in, a layer of cords (synthetic or steel) that
provides the strength to keep the inner layer from
blowing up like a balloon, and an outer layer that
provides abrasion resistances. The outer layer
frequently has evenly spaced pinholes to let any
minor leakage out. So a nick in the outer layer
isn't a big deal on most hoses.
